Gorilla trekking is an incredible experience popular in 3 countries that is Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. The activity involves hiking through the park rain forests in search of the apes and among these national parks include; Bwindi Impenetrable national park and Mgahinga gorilla national park of Uganda, Volcanoes national park of Rwanda and Virunga national park of Democratic Republic of Congo. But, to ensure the safety and well-being of both the mountain gorillas and visitors, there are specific rules and guidelines that must be followed during mountain gorilla trekking experience. Here are the general rules and regulations;
- Permits
For one to take part in the gorilla trekking experience, he or she must possess a valid trekking permit from Uganda wildlife Authority for those trekking in Bwindi and Mgahinga and then from Rwanda Development Board for those trekking in Rwanda. Permits are often limited, so it is advisable to book well in advance.
Note: The gorilla permits in Uganda are at USD 800 for foreign nonresidents in Uganda and then USD 1500 in Rwanda and then USD 400 for Congo. When you acquire a permit, please be keen on the time and date assigned on it.
- Minimum age
For one to go for the experience, the minimum age must be at least 15 years old in both Uganda and Rwanda.
- Illness
In case of any illness or contagious disease like flue and cough, you are not allowed to participate in the gorilla trekking experience. This is because mountain gorillas are highly vulnerable to human diseases.
- Group size
A maximum of 8 people is allowed per gorilla family per day and this minimizes the impact on the gorillas and reduces their stress.
- Maintain a safe distance
During the gorilla trekking experience, trekkers must maintain a minimum distance of 7 meters (about 21 feet) from the gorillas. This reduces the risk of disease transmission and stress to the animals.
- No Flash Photography
Flash can disturb the gorillas, so ensure your camera’s flash is turned off. Use natural lighting or low light photography techniques.
- Follow the Guide’s Instructions
As you head to the rainforests in search of the endangered species, you will be led by the experienced park rangers. So, you are advised to always listen to and follow their instructions since they are trained to handle any situation that may arise.
- No Littering
As you are enjoying the gorilla trekking experience, ensure that you do not leave any litter or waste behind. Dispose of it properly in designated areas.
- Fitness
As you are preparing for a gorilla trekking experience, ensure that you are in good physical condition as the trek can be demanding, often involving steep and uneven terrain.
- Packing
Bring sufficient water, snacks, and any necessary medication. Dress appropriately with long sleeves, long pants, and sturdy hiking boots. Consider bringing a walking stick and gloves for support.
- Limit Time
Upon meeting the endangered mountain gorillas, you are allowed to spend a maximum of one hour with them to prevent over-stressing them.
